Microscopy Summer School 2026<\/h1>\n\n\n

The microscopy summer school took place on May 25 and 26, 2026, in McGill, just before the annual meeting of the microscopy society of Canada<\/a>. Approximately a hundred of students and professionals were there. We covered themes from basic microscopy techniques to specialized approaches, allowing participants that are new to these methods as well as more experienced users to find content for their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La premi\u00e8re journ\u00e9e \u00e9tait consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 des cours th\u00e9oriques couvrant diff\u00e9rents niveaux d\u2019expertise. Des formations d\u2019introduction ont permis aux personnes qui se familiarisent avec les techniques de microscopie d\u2019en apprendre plus sur les principes fondamentaux de la microscopie \u00e9lectronique \u00e0 balayage coupl\u00e9e d\u2019EDS (avec Raynald Gauvin<\/a>) ou la microscopie \u00e9lectronique \u00e0 transmission coupl\u00e9e d\u2019EDS (avec Nadi Braidy). Anthony Smith a \u00e9galement donn\u00e9 un cours d\u2019introduction \u00e0 la microscopie \u00e0 Rayons X. Des conf\u00e9rences plus sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es abordaient des d\u00e9veloppements r\u00e9cents comme la microscopie \u00e9lectronique en transmission \u00e0 balayage 4D ou les syst\u00e8mes FIB-SEM (avec Lothar Houben et Philippe Plamondon respectivement).<\/p>\n\n\n

Some comments from Benjamin Rudski, student<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0This May, I was honoured to participate in the Microscopy Society of Canada summer school. This summer school was very accessible, enabling attendees in a variety of fields to learn from the content that was presented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As someone who analyses micro-computed tomography (\u00b5CT) volumes for my research, the summer school provided a great opportunity to step outside of my typical niche and learn about fluorescence microscopy techniques, including confocal and super-resolution approaches. These lectures, delivered by Dr. Joel Ryan and Dr. Tali Dadosh, were very thought-provoking and inspiring. I was pleased with the new knowledge I took away from these talks; even if the content was not directly applicable to my current work, it helped answer some questions I had and it may be of use later in my academic career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to these talks on scientific tools and techniques, I very much enjoyed the sessions on scientific soft skills. Through the lecture on image data and metadata management, delivered by Dr. Claire Brown, I learned about tools for keeping track of large imaging datasets, such as Omero. Moving forward, I\u2019m hoping to implement these approaches to help organise and categorise the datasets that I use in my own research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, the lectures on preparing scientific figures, delivered by Dr. Youssef Chebli, Dr. James Weaver and Elvis Branchini, will certainly benefit my work. In the few weeks since the conference, these two lectures have helped me think more about how to arrange and present my results in a clear and meaningful way without overwhelming readers and audience members.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Shumeng Jia gave a traning on life hacks and troubleshooting for X-ray microscopy. The main message there was that an X Ray microscope is just like a camera, and like any other camera, it faithfully records the sample as well as its artefacts. \"Therefore it is important to stay vigilant about the images we collect, remain skeptical during image processing, and not take manufacturer recommendations or default workflows for granted.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second day of the microscopy summer school was for workshops in smaller groups, for an interactive learning experience, allowing participants to touch the tools and ask questions directly to the specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le workshop d\u2019Ultra-microtomie, organis\u00e9 en collaboration avec Edge Scientific<\/a>, proposait une introduction compl\u00e8te au processus d\u2019ultramicrotomie, depuis la pr\u00e9paration des \u00e9chantillons jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019obtention de coupes ultrafines. Les participantes et participants ont pu d\u00e9couvrir les bonnes pratiques qui permettent d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la qualit\u00e9 des images, et de reconna\u00eetre les principaux artefacts courants. Des approches sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es pour la pr\u00e9paration d\u2019\u00e9chantillons polym\u00e9riques ou fragiles ont \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 couvertes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ultramicrotomy workshop, organized with the collaboration of Edge Scientific, gave a complete introduction tot he ultramicrotomy process, from the sample preparation to obtaining ultrafine cuts. The participants uncovered good habits improving the quality of images and how to recognize the most popular artefacts. Specialized approaches for the preparation of polymeric or other soft materials were also covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deux plages horaires \u00e9taient disponibles pour un atelier sur le traitement d\u2019image avec Dragonfly. Les participantes et participants ont pu d\u00e9couvrir les principales fonctionnalit\u00e9s du logiciel Dragonfly \u00e0 travers des pratiques guid\u00e9es utilisant une banque d\u2019images 3D h\u00e9berg\u00e9es dans le nuage. Les ateliers abordaient notamment le traitement d\u2019image, la segmentation, la visualisation 3D et les premi\u00e8res notions d\u2019analyse assist\u00e9e par intelligence artificielle, offrant une introduction pratique \u00e0 ces outils. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un des \u00e9tudiants b\u00e9n\u00e9voles, Benjamin Rudski, est un utilisateur exp\u00e9riment\u00e9 de Dargonfly 3D World et a donc assist\u00e9 Jana El Bsat, sp\u00e9cialiste en logiciel chez Comet Technologies Canada \u00e0 donner l\u2019atelier. Il a particuli\u00e8rement appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 l\u2019investissement des participantes et participants lors de l\u2019atelier, et commentait \u00ab\u00a0J\u2019aurais aim\u00e9 participer \u00e0 un tel atelier quand j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 utiliser Dragonfly, il y a presque 5 ans de cela. C\u2019\u00e9tait un plaisir d\u2019aider et, en cours de route, j\u2019ai m\u00eame appris de nouveaux outils de Dragonfly que j\u2019esp\u00e8re utiliser dans mes prochaines analyses d\u2019images\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L'\u00c9cole de Technologie Sup\u00e9rieure hosted a workshop entitled X-ray Tomography Comet YXion, Shape Memory Alloys and Intelligent System Laboratory. Durig this laboratoy, two high-resolution X-ray CT systems were introduced. This workshop brought part inspection, process control enabled by AI-driven segmentation, and quantitative analysis algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This summer school combined introduction trainings, state-of-the-art presentations and practical workshop is smaller group, allowing participants to develop their electron microscopy competence, whater their level or main field. We can't wait to see you again at the next summer school, in 2027 in Sherbrooke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
